Install Vagrant on openSUSE Leap 15: VirtualBox, Setup, and First VM

Quick one-liner: Get Vagrant running on openSUSE Leap 15 — install VirtualBox, configure permissions, create your first VM, and fix a common missing-directory issue.

🤔 Why This Matters

Whenever I need to quickly spin up a demo system on my laptop, Vagrant is my go-to tool. One command, and I have a fully configured VM.

On openSUSE Leap 15, Vagrant and VirtualBox are both available from the standard repos. Setup takes a few minutes.

🔧 Step 1: Install VirtualBox and Configure Permissions

sudo zypper install virtualbox
sudo usermod -aG vboxusers $USER

Log out and log back in so your group membership is reloaded. Verify:

id | grep vboxusers

🔧 Step 2: Install Vagrant

sudo zypper install vagrant

🔧 Step 3: Create Your First VM

Create a working directory and initialize:

mkdir vagrant-demo && cd vagrant-demo
vagrant init opensuse/openSUSE-15.0-x86_64
vagrant up
vagrant ssh

You're now logged into your new VM.

🔧 Step 4: Fix Missing Directories (If Needed)

Some Vagrant versions on Leap 15 ship with missing plugin directories. If vagrant init fails, fix it with symlinks:

cd /usr/lib64/ruby/gems/2.5.0/gems/vagrant-2.1.2
sudo ln -sf /usr/share/vagrant/plugins .
sudo ln -sf /usr/share/vagrant/templates .
sudo ln -sf /usr/share/vagrant/keys .

The exact path depends on your Vagrant version. Check with rpm -ql vagrant | grep gems.
